Have practiced lightweight packing ever since I was a child without knowing why. Backpacking was a natural progression for me rooted in a childhood of car camping with my family. After a tradition hostel-style backpacking trip around Europe for two months in 1998 the notion of less on the pack became apparent to me.
Post-college I opted to winter in Whitefish, MT and summer in West Glacier, MT where I found myself in the backcountry at just about every free opportunity. Exploring the Rocky Mountains cemented my love of backpacking and I decided to hike the 200+ mile Superior Hiking Trail in my home state of Minnesota in 2005. That summer I logged 100 nights sleeping in the outdoors (a record I've yet to break).
A move to Duluth, MN to be nearer to my family lasted approximately two years before the call of the mountains bested me yet again. I spent the summer of 2007 hiking the 1,100 mile Pacific Northwest Trail carrying a base pack weighing in the vicinity of ten pounds.
A year after the completion of my PNT thru-hike I was offered the opportunity to move to Bozeman, MT and work alongside the folks at Backpacking Light - an opportunity I was most gracious to accept. I traveled westward in July, 2008 and am currently happy exploring the hills of the Gallatin, Bridger, Crazy, Absaroka, Beartooth, Madison, and Tobacco Root mountain ranges.
