Packing a backpack is a skill very unique to each backpacker, and often times it is not standardized for each user.
- The ABCDEF's of Pack Packing
- A is for Accessibility, items needed in the day, often very quickly, such as layers, water, sunglasses, sunblock, lip balm, day shelters(for ski touring) and emergency items such as headlamp or first aid kit, need to be accessible. This is achieved by using pockets or side storage pockets, or having them at the top of a top loader or behind the panel on a panel loader
- B is for balanced. This is both laterally and vertically. Having a heavy object on one side without one on the other is going to cause discomfort for the backpacker through a long day. Having the heaviest load be in the middle of the back (or slightly lower for others, often women), will help the load feel comfortable, while heavy items far away from the back or lashed on will cause more centripetal force while walking or turning around, throwing the backpacker off balance.
- C is for compression, using straps, elastic, or other methods to keep the load as close to the back as possible. Foam pads can help if stowed as a cylinder and all items packed within, this distributes strap force evenly, preventing the straps from cutting through and not being effective. The foam also cushions delicate items.
- D
- E
- F is for Food above fuel, mainly with liquid fuels. Fumes from fuels can contaminate food, isolate it below the food, and make sure the threads of fuel bottles are on tightly.
